Day 22 Pendulum Wild Guess Ball on Ramp Lab: Acceleration

Warm Up 10/21 Glue in pages 26, 27, 28 Write at the top of page 28, “Equation of the best fit line____________________________” When done: Make Cornell Note on page 29, “Acceleration Notes” Ball on Ramp Lab (Wild Guess and Research Question) – Page 26 Data Table – Page 27 Graph & Conclusion – Page 28

Agenda Pendulum Wild Guess Ball on Ramp Lab Set Up Ball on Ramp Lab Data Collection Acceleration Notes Check Homework

Pendulum Wild Guess What was your wild guess? What was your prediction? (In your conclusion written on Monday) We will need two volunteers – One person to measure the 20 degrees and hold the stand – One tall person to drop the pendulum Everyone else will need to have timers We will go out into the hallway to test our wild guess (remember to use quiet voices and have your timer in hand, ready to listen for, “3, 2, 1, drop.”

Learning Target

Ball on Ramp Experiment Wild Guess: How long will it take a ball bearing to roll down TWO of these tubes at this angle? Research Question: How does the distance of a ball roll affect the time it will roll? Wild Guess Inquiry to Determine Pattern Making Sense of the Pattern Through Consensus Data Informed Prediction

Variables Independent Variable Dependent Variable Constants

Ball on Ramp Lab Hypothesis: – sketch in graph form – in words “I think when objects fall the distance depends on the time fallen in a ______ relationship” Time Distance

Draw Procedure See White Board Set up Lab and Collect Data – Please remember to use quiet voices as we go to Ms. Crock’s room

Set Up Cornell Notes Page 29 Title: Acceleration When Done: Bring out Homework -(Kinematics Reading: Acceleration 1.5)

Acceleration Vector – so always must include direction Equation: Acceleration = Δ velocity (v) / Δ time (t) ACCELERATION = (v final – v initial ) / (t final – t intial ) – Measured in m/s/s and a direction Objects can either speed up or slow down

Question: show work in notebook Calculate the acceleration for each question.

Answer Practice A Change in velocity (8 m/s – 0 m/s) =8 m/s Change in time (4 s – 0 s) = 4 s Acceleration= 8 m/s ÷ 4 s a= 2 m/s/s Practice B Change in velocity (0 m/s – 8 m/s) Change in time (4 s – 0 s) Acceleration = -8 m/s ÷ 4 s a= -2 m/s/s

Problem Set DO 1.Work together as a pair 2.Write your answers on the white board and in notebook. 3.Complete the problems one at a time 4.When done with a problem raise hand to see if you are right 5. Use your notes if you have a question DONE BY: End of class (the rest is for homework) WHEN DONE Work on your Table of Contents Turn in homework Show margin notes on iPad to teacher or turn in notes
