Week 35 Directions Prepare your desk for science. Science notebook Use voice level 2 (conversation) to discuss this question: “What is friction? What do you know about it?”

2 Targets & Warm Up Targets:
Students will observe and describe the effect of friction on the motion of objects. Warm Up: What is friction? What do you know about it?

3 Friction A force that acts when two surfaces rub together
It can slow or stop moving objects or keep objects from starting to move The amount of friction between two surfaces depends on: The object’s surface How hard the objects press together

Once you are finished with the Table of Contents, go to page 88 & 89 and add the title and date to the top of the page.

5 Question How does the surface of an inclined plane affect the motion of an object?

6 Hypothesis If the inclined plane surface is covered in ( sandpaper / wax paper ), then the object will move when the ramp is at a ( lower / higher ) angle.

7 Materials Ramp Angle Protractor Sandpaper board Wax paper board
Toy car Eraser

8 Procedure Put the car at the top of the sandpaper board.
Have someone in your group hold the Ramp Angle Protractor. Use your hand to slowly raise the board so it forms an inclined plane. When each object reaches the bottom of the inclined plane, record the angle of the inclined plane. Repeat steps 2 to 5 twice more for a total of two trials. Replace the car with the eraser and follow steps 2 to 5. Repeat steps 1 to 6 with the car and eraser but use the wax paper board instead.

Written Analysis: How did using the different materials affect the angle at which the objects moved? What are your results from the experiment? Conclusion: Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Why? Use background research, scientific information/vocabulary, and your own observations to support your thinking.

12 Reflection Questions What did you learn about friction? What is the effect of friction on the motion of objects? Other than friction, were there other forces acting upon the car and eraser?
