First launched in the academic year by the W.P. Carey Program in Entrepreneurship and Management (now part of the Center for Leadership Education), started as a competition just for full-time undergraduate students.W.P. Carey Program in Entrepreneurship and ManagementCenter for Leadership Education The competition is now open to all full-time, part-time, and post-doc students from any of the academic divisions of the University. Highly qualified judges from a variety of business fields are selected to evaluate students’ executive summaries, business plans and presentations. Categories Each business plans may be submitted to only one of the following categories: 1.Life Sciences (includes Biotechnology and Medical Devices) 2.General Business 3.Social Enterprise

General Business Category 1 st Place - $6,000 2 nd Place - $4,000 3 rd Place - $2,000 Runners Up - $250 Life Science Category 1 st Place - $6,000 2 nd Place - $4,000 3 rd Place - $2,000 Runners Up - $250 Social Enterprise Category 1 st Place - $6,000 2 nd Place - $4,000 3 rd Place - $2,000 Runners Up - $250

Participation At least one team member has to be an enrolled student (either full-time or part-time) in one of the academic divisions at Johns Hopkins University. Student can enter as an individual or with other team members. If the team consists of non-Hopkins members, the Hopkins' student(s) must participate in the presentation if the team makes it to the semi-finals and finals. Pre-Existing Companies Teams may submit business plans for pre-existing companies, provided that: The company is pre-profit The company has received less than $10,000 in outside investment. Re-Entering the Competition in the Future Business plans that have placed first, second, or third in any category in any previous years of the Hopkins' Business Plan Competition may not re-enter, even if the plan has been substantially changed.

Initial Round Sunday, March 4, 2012: Executive Summaries due (up to 5 pages) Monday, March 19, 2012: Top 8 teams in each category are announced Final Round Friday, March 30, 2012: Written business plans are due (up to 20 pages) Wednesday, April 25, 2012: Updated business plans are due Friday, April : Formal presentations 7 Minute Presentation 8 Minute Question & Answer by the judges

Sample Structure (up to 5 pages) Company Profile Industry – describe the main activity of your business Stage of Development - describe where your product or service stands in overall progress. Opportunity - describe the problem you have identified that your product or service will address. Product/Service Offering - describe how your product or service solves the problem you have identified. Business Model Describe the process by which your company will generate revenues and turn a profit from your product or service. Market Overview Describe your market (e.g. size of the market and the growth rate of the market). Customer Profile Describe your target customer, based on the market niche to which your company will cater. Competition Overview Describe the types of companies and products your company will face in your target market. Competition Advantage Describe why the products or services offered by the company are better than competing offerings. Operations Provide the work plan of the business Financials Summarize the overall financial plan (it can be in the format of a detailed budget).
