Integer Numbers Extending the number line

Objectives know that integers are; whole numbers with two parts know that the parts are; sign and absolute value know the sign tells us; which side of zero the integer is on know that the absolute value is; how far the integer is away from zero on the number line

Integers are whole numbers with two parts The number line above shows the positive and negative whole numbers either side of zero. Zero is neither positive nor negative. These numbers, along with zero are called integers.

Integers are whole numbers with two parts From the previous slide we can conclude that integers, other than zero, have two parts;  a positive + or negative – symbol  a whole number

The parts of an integer are its sign and absolute value The technical name for the for the symbol is the sign of the integer. The technical name for the whole number part is absolute value Positive sign -5-5 Absolute value 3 Absolute value 5 Negative sign

The sign tells us which side of zero the integer is on The number line shows that the sign tells us which side of zero the integer lies on. On a horizontal number line the negative integers are always on the left of zero, and the positive integers are on the right.

Absolute value is how far the integer is away from zero on the number line The absolute value tells us how many steps away from zero the integer is on the number line
