2.1 Integers & Absolute Value 2.2 Adding Integers

Vocabulary  Negative numbers: numbers less than zero.  Integers: all the whole numbers, zero, and all the negative whole numbers.  { …-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,…}  Zero is not positive or negative.  Absolute value: the distance away from zero on a number line.

 |3| = 3 the absolute value of a positive number is just that same number.  |-3| = 3 the absolute value of a negative number is its opposite.  EXAMPLES: Page 59: # 1-19

Adding Integers  Two Rules:  1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE: 3 + 16 = 19  -3 + -5 = -8

 2. To ADD numbers with different signs, SUBTRACT the absolutes values and the answer has the same sign as the number with the largest absolute value.  EXAMPLE: -3 + 7 = 7 - 3 = 4  -5 + 2 = 5 - 2 = -3  4 + -10 = 10 – 4 = -6
