About Tokyo  Tokyo is the capital city of Japan  It houses 12 million people  It’s the home of the Imperial family  Located in Honshuu  It used to be called “Edo,” but its name changed to Tokyo in 1868  It was originally a fishing village  Enjoys humid summers and cool winters

History of Tokyo  Tokyo went through 3 eras - Edo Era (1603 ~ 1867) - Meiji + Taisho Era (1868 ~ 1945) - Showa + Heisei Era (1946 ~ Present)

Edo Era  After Tokugawa won the battle of Sekigahara, he took control and established his government in Tokyo  Many lived in peace and culture bloomed  In 1858, American fleets came to Japan demanding the country to open up  Meiji Era started, and Edo became Tokyo in 1868

Meiji + Taisho Era  Japan started to take in foreign culture into their society  Telecommunication was developed in 1869 and steam locomotives in 1872  Japan became militaristic during this era, thus beginning the war with the United States

Showa + Heisei Era  At the beginning of this era, Tokyo was under McArthur and U.S GHQ’s command  New constitution came into effect in 1947  Tokyo was given the special ward system in 1949  Tokyo regained control in 1952  Tokyo began to bloom and restore after the Olympics that was held in 1964

Continued  Firebombing in 1945 during the World War II - Around 75,000 to 200,000 people were killed - Due to the bombing, Tokyo’s industrial output has been cut into half - Bombs from the assault are still being found

Nogi Shrine  Named after the General who killed himself with his wife after the death of the Meiji emperor  Once destroyed by the bombing that took place in WWII, but was restored

Akihabara  Major shopping place for electronic equipments an anime-related franchise  In short, otaku heaven  Has one of the first stores that dedicated to personal robots and robotics

Tokyo Disneyland  Located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan (Near Tokyo)  First Disneyland built outside of U.S.  Became active at April 15th, 1983  7 Themed areas

Tokyo Tower  Communications tower in Minato, Tokyo  Built in 1958  Works as communications tower that broadcasts TV shows and radio signals for Japanese media  Also works as an observation tower  Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in France

Shibuya  One of the 23 wards of Tokyo  Owns one of Tokyo’s busiest railway stations, which is the Shibuya Station  Major nightlife area known to never “sleep”  Famous place of origin for the story of the faithful dog, “Hachikoo”  Also has a statue dedicated to Hachikoo
