Opening Activity: What are your Super Powers?  On the Superhero mask provided write the following: 1. Your name 2. /Contact info 3. School you are affiliated /grades you will teach “Super Powers” or “Talents” you feel you bring to the classroom 5. On the inside of the mask, state what you fear the most (your biggest challenge) concerning FCCLA and teaching Family and Consumer Sciences this year.  Decorate your Mask  Put your mask on and introduce yourself to someone in the room (someone you do not know) and share your powers and challenge with them.

Introductions  Introduce the person you just met and share their super powers and biggest challenge with the group.  Be sure to write down anyone’s name who you feel you should connect with this year who you might use as a resource person because he/she has talent in areas you are challenged with.

Role Play Activity  Part I:  We are going to divide into groups.  At each table a state officer will be at the table to role play a “type of student” that you might encounter.  Your job is convince the student to join FCCLA and become involved in a project or activity (one that maybe was mentioned earlier that the state officers shared). You have five minutes.

Role Play Activity: Unmasking the real student and connect  Part II:  Unveil the “real student”  State officers please turn your masks inside out to reveal who you really are. Show the teachers what you really want.  Teachers your job is to take the information you know now and try to get them to become involved in an FCCLA activity.  You have 5 minutes to do this  Disucss

How Do You Connect?  Know your students/Know their interests (What are some things you can do? Officers how do you think teachers can connect or get to know their students?)  Link your passion with theirs.  Be enthusiastic! Most student feed off of your enthusiasium.  Be trustworthy and show that you care.  Be flexible and be able to adapt.  Keep up with the trends. Be relatable!  Show them why it is important and how they can use this in their personal and professional life.

(Possible Role Play Activity) Unmasking “Everyone’s Potential” through FCCLA 1. Part One: Each state officer plays a role of a “type” of student and each state officer will sit at a table with 2-3 New FCS teachers and they will try to get you to be involved with an FCCLA activity…you of course will resist and play your role (non-verbally and verbally) ( Before the role play we will make a mask and you will wear it during the role play. The mask will describe who you are on the outside. Example: Football jock…his mask would read what he thinks about FCCLA….. “I’m cool” “I’m better than you” “Too Cool for Service Leaning” “I’m the caption for football…I know how to lead” “FCCLA…not!.... I have a reputation to uphold” etc ◦The teachers will try to come up with strategies to get you involved 2. Part Two: Unveil the real student On the inside of the mask identify things that students is really looking for or is afraid of (Example: Afraid of public speaking…. Lacks teamwork….Procrastinates…wants to go to college and play football etc.) Turn mask inside out and put it on. ◦The teachers will then try to connect you with FCCLA using the information on the mask. ◦State officers you make step 1 and 2 ideas up…you know how teens think and what they really want. I can later tweek them to fit. (On the inside of the mask I would like to have things that might focus around their fears of leadership and soft skills they might need later in life.)

Share Role Play Each group of teachers shares their “type” of student and how they plan to connect with them through FCCLA.

How do I Connect and teach content too???!!! 1. Review your standards for your course 2. Pick a related National Program and or State Project and will relate (Pick one and run with it…don’t over do yourself. Start small) Choose one that you feel most comfortable with or one that might best fit your student’s needs. Example: Career Class (National Program: Career Connection) Review the program ( Teach the program to your students and then have them develop a project. 3. Promote/Market 4. Apply for National Grant or have a group of interested students enter it in the STAR Event “National Programs”

Integrating FCCLA: National/State Projects Mapping o On large newsprint write the name of your course you are teaching and choose a standard to address o Review the National Programs (pp ) or the State FCCLA projects (pp ) in the mini handbook and find one program and or project that would address that standard. o Identify that program/standard o Describe a class project/activity that addresses the standard and the goals of the program/project.

Integrating FCCLA: STAR Events o Review the Competitive STAR Events (pp ) in the mini handbook o Match a STAR Event opportunity that reflects one of your standard’s for your course. o Describe a potential STAR Event project students could do.
