1 The Embedded Chapter Concept
FCCLA Workshop August 4, 2010 G. Randel, Presenter KSDE Education Program Consultant, FACS

2 What does “embedded” mean?
Embedded refers to totally integrating the FCCLA national programs, concepts and mission into Family and Consumer Sciences classroom. Embedded refers to providing the “how” along with the “what” and the “ why”. Teachers teach the what and the why in a course, but sometimes not the how to use the information to make a difference in their lives or the lives of others.

3 So, what would an embedded chapter look like?
It could be whatever you want it to be…but here is one idea: Each class you teach would elect officers (President—lead the “mini-chapter”; Secretary—keep records; Recorder—share information with others) Each class you teach would have incorporated the National Program materials that fit. Each class you teach could identify and complete a project that fits the topic area. This could be turned into a STAR Event AND/OR submitted for National Program Awards.

4 So, what about those things the “entire” chapter need to do…
“Class Presidents” could act as the representatives to bring their classes thoughts and comments to the table and form an “exec council”. The exec council would make decisions for the entire chapter. The exec council could also elect a “Chair” to oversee the discussions and business. Voting could be a ballot completed in each class, the presidents taking the completed ones to the “exec council” meetings to count as a group. Members not enrolled with a class could maybe attend the “exec council” meetings as their connection. Other considerations would have to be made locally.

5 Benefits to the students…
Enhances learning and change of behavior. Increased chances of leadership opportunities. Offers a solution to the “no time” to work on projects and activities. Assist in scholarship qualifications/resume building. Opportunity for advancement in leadership and recognition from the local school to the district, state and national levels.

6 Benefits to the teacher/advisor…
Decreased planning/advising time outside of school day. Access to resources that provide authentic applications and are free or at nominal cost. Resources are current (National office updates continually). No cost to school other than membership fee. Opportunity for recognition and financial awards are in place. Resources already linked to academics and assessment rubrics. Provides teaching resources that “address” a number of the courses and their competencies…. ……let’s explore these links…

7 Group Participation… (Note--results will be posted on the FCCLA website under advisor resources)
FACS Topic Outlines--one course (color) per table National Program list and description on table as well DIRECTIONS: Using the topic outline, identify which national programs offer resources for that course, noting results on the summary sheet for your course. Turn summary sheet over…identify which STAR Events could serve as assessment project for your course

8 Have a great school year….
