IHDCYH IDSEA CIHR Factors to Consider 1.Static to slow growth of CIHR budget 2.Potential for budget growth is through engagement of provinces and health budgets 3.External leverage and partnerships should be key strategy 4.CIHR adopting more focused strategy for strategic investments: (a) Signature Initiatives (b) Strategy for Patient Oriented Research

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA CIHR Strategic Plan (Roadmap) 5 Research Priorities Enhance Patient-Oriented Care and Improve Clinical Results Support a High-Quality, Accessible and Sustainable Health-Care System Reduce Health Inequities of Aboriginal Peoples and other Vulnerable Populations Prepare For and Respond To Existing and Emerging Threats to Health Promote Health and Reduce the Burden of Chronic Disease and Mental Illness Priority 1 Priority 2 Priority 3 Priority 4 Priority 5

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA Signature Initiatives Strategic investment planning to enable CIHR to allocate its resources to make the strongest possible impact on health and health care Concentrating resources on priority areas for greater focus and impact

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA 1.Canadian Epigenetics, Environment and Health Research Consortium 2.Inflammation in Chronic Disease 3.Community Based Primary Health Care 4.Personalized Medicine 5.Evidence-based Healthcare Renewal 6.International Collaborative Research Strategy on Alzheimer’s Disease 7.Pathways to Health Equities for Aboriginal Peoples 8.Patient Oriented Research Networks & Support Units Signature Initiatives Approved

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA New Signature Initiatives Approved 1.Integrated Health Services 2.Environmental Threats to Health

IHDCYH IDSEA Signature Initiative Integrated Health Services BACKGROUND Lack of integration (vertical, horizontal, 3D) is a key deficiency in the Canadian health care system OBJECTIVES Vertical Integration - leverage provincial investment to achieve integration of services from primary to tertiary and policy; Horizontal Integration – catalyze translation of evidence into practice to improve care and outcomes; 3D Integration - incent Paediatric Hospitals to be truly “research” hospitals that support both basic and clinical research, and extend the culture and capacity to community. 2

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA Environmental Threats to Health Advancing Measures & Methods Decision Making Prevention Systems Injury & Mobility Diabesity Environmentally induced Cancer & cardiorespiratory Illness One Health Big Science

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA Strategy for Patient Oriented Research To ensure the translation of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the point-of-care To help the provinces and territories meet the challenge of delivering high quality, cost-effective health care Two mechanisms: Patient Oriented Research Networks Support Units

IHDCYH IDSEA IHDCYH IDSEA SPOR Networks Approved 1.Access to Mental Health Care 2.Community Based Primary Care Networks Open Call in 2013
