Origins Have you ever wondered where our laws and government came from? In Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, our forefathers created the Constitution of the United States in Independence Hall that spelled out the formation of the new government of the newly independent United States that’s divided into three branches.

Legislative The first branch of government is the Legislative branch. This branch creates the laws and contains 100 senators and 435 people in the House of Representatives.

What does the Legislative branch do?  Votes for the president Votes for the president  Removes laws Removes laws  Nothing Nothing  Creates laws Creates laws

Correct! The Legislation branch creates the laws of the United States!

Executive The second branch is the Executive branch. The Executive branch carries out the laws and contains the president, the vice president, and the cabinet.

Judicial The third and final branch of the US government is the Judicial. This branch evaluates the laws and contains the Supreme court and other federal courts.

Which of the following is NOT a branch of the government?  Executive Executive  Legislative Legislative  Associative Associative  Judicial Judicial

Correct! The US branches of government are Executive, Judicial, and Legislative.

Checks and Balances The branches of government has a checks and balances system where each one can balance the other:  The president can veto laws from Congress  Congress can reject the president’s appointments and can remove him from office  The Supreme Court can overturn unconstitutional laws, and justices are appointed by the president

Conclusion The US government is divided into three branches: the Legislative that creates the laws, the Executive that carries out the laws, and the Judicial that evaluates the laws. Each branch has some sort of power over the other that keeps the system in check.
