1 Explain in their own words, if you believe that one branch of the United States government is more important than the others? Why or why not? No, the system of checks and balances is in place because no one branch of the government is any more or less important than the others. For our government system to work, it is essential that all three branches of government work together. For example, the president can check Congress’ power by vetoing bills passed by Congress, can call special sessions of Congress, and can suggest legislation. Congress can check the President’s power by overriding the President’s veto with a 2/3rd vote, can impeach and remove the President, and the Senate can refuse to ratify treaties. The Supreme Court can check Congress’ power by declaring laws unconstitutional and are appointed for life freeing them from legislative control. The Supreme Court can check the President’s power by declaring executive acts unconstitutional and are appointed for life freeing them from executive control. The President can check the Supreme Court’s power by appointing Supreme Court Justices and granting pardons to federal offenders. The Congress can check the Supreme Court’s power by impeaching and removing federal judges and refusing to confirm judicial appointments.
