Roles and Responsibilities of School Principals

Management is getting the work Done through others. What is Management? Management is getting the work Done through others. It has to do with planning, directing, organizing/delegating ,controlling, staffing.

Principal as Manager The Principal provides management and expertise for the purpose of Educating students in an ever Changing environment. He/She manages the policies, regulations and procedures to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe learning environment which meets the expectation of the Ministry of Education.

Principal as Manager Contd. The Management that the principal provides is broad based and functional. Broad Based Functional Defines quality and ethos of the institution: Human Resource Management Emergency Procedures Facilities Management Defines the performance within the institution: Curriculum Development Co curricular Activities Establish and Maintain Staff Discipline Supervision

Principal as Manager Contd. Principal influences the school culture by: Building a Vision Stimulating Innovation Encouraging Performance They make things happen and ensure the accomplishment of the organization’s task Three questions should be asked and thoroughly explored What attributes of an effective mathematics programme are already in my school? What specific roadblocks are we (principal and staff) facing in the area of numeracy and mathematics improvement? What strategies can I as administrator put in place to help teachers in their mathematics improvement initiatives?

Principal as Manager Contd. The Roles and Responsibilities of the Principal exist regardless of the type of school, size, and its geographic location. While there are degrees of commonalties among schools, the role of the school principal must of necessity be shaped by the environment in which the principal functions.

Roles and Responsibilities of Principals Interpersonal Skills and Relations Promotes a positive image of the school within the community. Communicate with stakeholders in a timely manner. Maintain visibility with students, teachers, parents and school boards. Create a positive relationship with staff, students, parents, school board and community.

Instructional Leadership Work with staff to initiate and facilitate on-going curriculum review and development, keeping pace with educational trends and policies of the Ministry. Articulate the mission of the school Articulate the vision of the school

Instructional Leadership Cont’d Maintain and keep current personal files for all school employees. Ensure that students’ records are complete and current. Provide leadership opportunities for teachers and students. Conduct Gap Analysis

Planning Know and believe in the school’s philosophy and model mission statement Share common vision of the school with stakeholders Develop School Improvement Plan Align the School Improvement Plan with the legal, financial and organizational structure of the school system Ensure the procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total school programme

Roles and Responsibilities of Principals Cont’d 4. Management of Support Facilities Monitor day-to-day operations of the school Establish and Maintain an effective inventory system for all school supplies, materials and equipment provided to carryout the school’s Programmes Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters Identify and recommend the expansion of instructional facilities and purchase of equipment Ensure the capital equipment are written off by the Board of Survey, Ministry of Finance.

Finance Management Utilize financial and human resources to fully accomplish the goals and mission of the school within the Financial Administration and Audit Act. Develop and oversee the School Budget, in conjunction with the school management team Maintain and account for all funds raised from students’ activities and monies collected from students.

Human Resources Management Assist the School Board in verifying the existence of vacant posts Assist the School Board in the recruitment and selection process for all staff Provide adequate orientation and student information for new students, e.g.. school rules and uniform outlined in students handbook

Human Resources Management Cont’d Establish job descriptions and qualifications for positions in accordance with the Ministry of Education for all supervised employees Conduct Performance Evaluation Make recommendations to School Board on the appointment, promotion, demotion or dismissal of members of staff in accordance with the Education Act of 1980 and Staff Orders. Identify staff development and training needs and set up referral procedures to ensure that training is obtained

Time Management Establish the annual master schedule for instructional programmes, ensuring sequential learning experiences for students consistent with the school’s philosophy , mission statement and instructional goals. Maintain a master schedule to be posted for all teachers. Establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas (including before and after school) .

Professionalism & Work Ethics Demonstrate knowledge of the education regulation and staff orders of the Public Service as it relates to the rights and responsibilities of staff and students and the role and responsibility of the school board . Display the highest ethical and professional behaviour and the standards when working with students, parents and school personnel

Professionalism & Work Ethics Cont’d Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and used the discretion in sharing such information within legal confines. Serve as a Role Model for students and teachers, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning . Demonstrate pride in the teaching professional and encourage all teachers to do the same.

Organizational Culture Maintain a positive school climate and morale Create a foster a community of learners which portray national and civic pride Provide learner-centered leadership for staff and students Encourage healthy relationship based on mutual trust and respect

What is Total Quality Management? It is continuously meeting agreed customer requirements at the lowest cost, by releasing the potential of all employees

The Quality Improvement Cycle Quality improvement happens as a continuous cycle: Understand Customers Regiments Meet customer’s Requirements Measure Success Keep Improving By continuously checking our customer’s requirements we keep finding areas in which improvements can be Made.
