Introduction to Chemistry

Objectives What is chemistry and how is it part of everyday life What are the basic units of measurement in chemistry. What is matter and how does it interact What is energy and how is it related to matter

Chemistry Chemistry is the study of the properties of matter and the interactions the matter undergoes. The study of stuff – What it is made of – what it does in different environments – what happens when you put it with other stuff.

Geometry is used in Chemistry to help understand BOTH the Structures of the tiny particles that make up matter… … as well as the angles between chemical bonds, and overall shape of chemical compounds and molecules.

Mathematics is also used in chemistry. Stoichiometr y is a method of mathematica l chemical analysis used to determine how much of something can be produced using a given chemical reaction.

There are MANY branches of Chemistry.

General Chemistry is the study of how stuff reacts with other stuff. Physical chemistry is the study of how different stuff can be used.

Kinetics has to do with how fast a reaction occurs. Thermodyna mics is the study of how heat and energy are transferred.

Organic Chemistry is the study of hydrocarbons and their reactions. Inorganic chemistry is the study of stuff made from all the other atoms.

Electrochem istry is the study of the flow of electrons, which is electricity. Nuclear chemistry is the study of changing one type of matter into another.

As our society continues to advance, an understanding of the science of Chemistry is becoming increasingly more important.
