Slide 1: TYPES OF HELP There are many types of mental-heath professionals. These are people who are specially trained to recognize and treat mental disorders. The type of treatment they offer depends upon their training

Slide 2: Psychiatrist A physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental disorders is called a psychiatrist (sy-KY-uh-trist). Psychiatrist are M.D.’s (doctors of medicine) with advanced training in the treatment of mental illness. They look for physical, as well as nonphysical, reasons for mental illness. Psychiatrist talk with patients, and sometimes with family members, to Identify symptoms of mental disorders. They also examine patients for physical causes.

Slide 3: After diagnosing a disorder, a psychiatrist may treat the disorder in a variety of ways. Because psychiatrist are medical doctors, they can prescribe medication to treat mental disorders.

Slide 4: If a psychiatrist suspect that a patients symptoms may have an organic cause, he or she may recommend testing by a neurologist. A neurologist (nou-RAHL-uh-jist) is a physician who specializes in detecting and treating organic disorders of the brain and nervous system.
