5 Types of Mental Health Professionals Psychiatrist is a physician who can diagnose and treat mental disorders. Can prescribe medications. Clinical psychologists are trained to recognize and treat behavior that is not normal. Socials workers help people with mental disorders and their families to accept and adjust to an illness. Mental Health Counselors focus on specific problems or work with specific groups of people.

6 Kinds of treatments Psychotherapy Insight Therapy- helps people better understand their behaviors. With the information they have been given they might be able to change their behaviors. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy- helps a person identify situations, objects, or thoughts that trigger abnormal behaviors. The goal is to develop new behaviors. Group Therapy- people meet other people with the similar disorders. The group members work together to develop new coping skills.

7 Kinds of Therapy (continued) Drug Therapy- Doctors prescribe certain drugs for mental disorders. The drugs relieve symptoms and normal behavior can begin. Hospitalization- Sometimes people with mental disorders need constant supervision or are a danger to themselves and/or others. The patients receive therapy in the hospital. The staff helps patients prepare to leave the hospital. After the patients return home, sometimes social workers will come and check on them.
