Reading, Writing, & Research for English Language Learners Governor’s Teacher Network

NCDPI and GTN The NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) established the Governor's Teacher Network (GTN) as a platform for teachers to share their best work around instruction and professional development. This initiative is funded by the state’s Race to the Top grant.

The purpose of my study. The purpose of my study is to use online resources, multimedia, personal narratives, and Google Maps to engage ELLs in research, reading and writing. Using technology bolsters the research skills of ELLs; it also helps find a balance between challenging work and language comprehension. Engagement hinges on creating challenging assignments that can be understood and implemented with a diverse group.

Last years mapping project became the precursor to this year’s GTN project.

Using maps allows ELLs to put their writing into a less intimidating context instead of asking them to write a lengthy writing project.

This year we will use Google maps easy to use adaptable to HomeBase

This year’s Google Maps project Students will research their home and new country Interview a relative—facts and anecdotes Add information to a Google doc Map where they have come from and where they live now on Google Maps They will add pop-up paragraphs filled will information to teach others about their journey.
