Transportation Transportation is the way we get from one place to another. Like skating or bicycling to where you need to go!

Activity 1: Graph how to get to school Preparation: Create a bar graph on a piece of laminated poster board using a dry erase marker. Label the categories with the words: Feet, Car, Bus, Bike, and Other.

Activity 1: Graph how to get to school Directions: Write your name on a posted note. Place it in the category that best describes how you got to school this morning.

Activity 1: Graph how to get to school Questions: What does the bar graph look like? Why do you think it looks this way?

Activity 2: Brainstorm Types of Transportation Directions: Get into groups of 3-5 students. Make a list of all of the different types of transportation you can think of. In 5-10 minutes we will talk about what you came up with as a whole class. DON’T FORGET ABOUT SLEDS AND SKATES!

Types of Transportation There are many types of transportation: Water Transportation: Boats Skies Submarines Swimming Surfing

Types of Transportation There are many types of transportation: Land Transportation: Car Bus Trains Rollerblades Sleds Walking

Types of Transportation There are many types of transportation: Air Transportation: Airplanes Helicopters Hand Gliders Parachutes Hot Air Balloons

Limitations on Transportation Land transportation has to stay on land, water transportation has to stay on water, and air transportation has to stay in the air. The geology of the land tells us what kind of transportation we need. Each type of transportation requires some type of fuel to make it move.

Maps Maps are used to find your way and to show someone else the way. A map is an illustration of a specific or general area of the earth. It can be used to find a route or to tell the geographic layout of a particular area. You can make a map leading to anything you want. It can be a map of your bedroom or even your back yard.

Types of Maps There are many forms that a map can take: Globes- round, spherical maps of the earth. Topographical- a map showing land forms and elevations. Political- a map that shows capitals and major cities. Regional- a map that focuses on a specific area.

Activity 3: File Folder Games Directions: Get into groups of 3-5 students. Lay file folder game across the table and pick out one of the (miniature people) game pieces. Mix the drawing cards up and lay them upside down in the place marked drawing cards on the game board. The dice has a car, boat, airplane and feet marked on different sides of the die. Take turns rolling the die who ever rolls the side with feet gets to go first. Play this game until the timer goes off.

Cardinal Directions and Compass Cardinal directions-tell us North,South, East and West. The sign found in one of the four corners of a map is called the cardinal direction sign. Compass- This is a tool that has a needle which points in one of the four cardinal directions. It shows you how to go North, if that’s the way you need to go.

Activity 4: 100’s Chart and Cardinal Directions Directions: Take your 100’s chart out of your desk. “We are going to use them with the cardinal directions we have just learned about.” LISTEN CLOSELY AS I GIVE YOU SOME SETS OF DIRECTIONS!

Activity 4: 100’s Chart and Cardinal Directions Follow my directions closely! Put your finger on 33. Go three (3) spaces east. Now go south four (4) spaces. Go four (4) spaces west. Finally, go north five (5) spaces. What number are you on? Now listen as I read a few more!

Map Keys Map Keys contain symbols that represent objects on a map. Here are some examples of symbols that you may find on a map key. Airport Capital City Highway River

Activity 5: Create a Map Key Now that you know what a map key is, get a piece of drawing paper and create one using the objects in this room. Make sure that you make your key clear, you will be using it for your next project.

Activity 6: Create Classroom Maps Get into groups of 3-5 students, come and find meand I will give you your secret location. When you have your location pick one group member’s map key and create a map of the classroom leading to your secret location. When you are finished we will swap maps and try to find each others secret location.
