INTRODUCTION – DEFINITION OF STRESS Researchers define stress as “a physical, mental, or emotional response to events that causes bodily or mental tension” (‘Definition’, 2011). Stress can be any outside force or event that has an effect on our body or mind. Retrieved from:

EXPECTATIONS…? By the end of the session you should be able to: Successfully and professionally define stress Understand what it is and how it affects the individual and an organisation Identify (4) ‘stress creators’ and the (4) different approaches to dealing with them.

WHAT MAKES YOU STRESSED? BRAINSTORM……

WHY IS DEALING WITH STRESS IMPORTANT ON AND ORGANISATIONAL/INDIVIDUAL LEVEL? Distracted workers = inefficiency Health deterioration = increase in absenteeism/labour turnover Decrease in productivity Reduction in quality of work HOWEVER… A controlled amount can be essential for motivation.

Impaired concentration and focus Declining productivity Social relationship strains between employees Frustration and Pressure HOW/WHY DOES STRESS AFFECT THE WORKPLACE NEGATIVELY?

ROLE –PLAY ACTIVITY “A STRESSFUL SCENARIO”  Participants sorted into small groups of 3-4  Three (3) participants to act out the role-play, “A Stressful Situation”  Record and Discuss anything in the scenario that could cause stress  Narrow down to (4) stress creators

FOUR (4) STRESS-CREATORS  Job Tension/Pressure and Deadlines  Lack of Sleep  Poor Health  Family Matters How Do These Factors Impact Ethan’s Life?

THE (4) PRACTICAL APPROACHES TO DEALING WITH STRESS- CREATORS -Get organised: Keep a Diary or a schedule -Exercise: 20 minutes a day to clear your head Walk, jog, yoga, team sports, swimming, skipping or dancing -Eat well: buy and cook in bulk, 2 fruit 5 veg! -Breathe (and count to ten before you speak): When angry it can be easy to take frustrations out on family/friends/colleagues who were not involved.

o (4) main stress creators: -Job Tension/Pressure and Deadlines -Lack of Sleep -Poor Health -Family Matters o (4) simple and practical approaches to combat stress; -Get organised -Exercise: 20 minutes a day -Eat well -Breathe (and count to ten!) SUMMARY
