The Preamble to the Constitution A text talk

We the people of the United States Preamble: An introduction that gives reasons for the parts that follow. The Preamble to the Constitution gives the reasons the Constitution was written by the people of the United States.

In order to form a more perfect union Union: A nation formed by combining members. The United States is a Union of 50 states and all the people who live in those states.

Establish justice, Establish: To make something permanent. Justice: Being fair or just. The Constitution was written to make justice permanent for everyone.

Insure domestic tranquility, Insure: To make certain Domestic: Done in your own country. Tranquility: Being calm and quiet - peaceful. The Constitution was written to make certain that our country is a peaceful place to live.

Provide for the common defense Common: for everyone. Defense: “I’ve got your back.” “You are safe with me.” The Constitution was written so that everyone could know they were safe.

Promote the general welfare Promote: to make important. Welfare: The things that people need to stay healthy and safe. The Constitution was written so that the United States could provide what people need to be healthy and safe.

and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, Liberty: To be free to make your own decisions. Posterity: All the people who are alive now, and who will be born later. The Constitution was written by people who wanted to be free to make their own decisions, and wanted all people now and later to be free as well.
