1. Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
What does it all mean?

3. We the people of the United States,
We the citizens of America

4. In Order to form a more perfect Union,
Want to join together perfectly
In other words, the new constitution needed to form a stronger, better bond between the states than the Articles of Confederation!

5. Establish Justice,
The writers of our constitution wanted to make sure that they set up systems that would insure basic fairness to citizens.
Create fairness for everyone

6. Insure domestic tranquility
The writers of the constitution wanted to make sure that they made arrangements for the general health, welfare, and public peace of all communities.
Guarantee peace at home

7. provide for the common defense
This means that methods would be provided to protect our nation.
Examples: Army, National Guard, etc.
Supply for everyone’s security

8. promote the general Welfare, and
This means that citizens should have a sense of well-being in their lives and communities.
Support the whole country’s health

9. secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,
and protect the Blessings of freedom to ourselves and those who follow us.
The writers of the constitution wanted to make sure that freedom in the US would stand the test of time!

10. do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Do set forth and create this Constitution for the
United States of America.
