The CBI says… “The most important factors employers weigh up when recruiting school and college leavers are their attitudes to work (78%), their general aptitudes (57%) and literacy and numeracy (50%). These rank well ahead of academic results alone (37%)” “Two fifths (40%) of new starters say not enough time and attention was given to acquiring work-related skills while they were in education” CBI/Pearson education and skills survey 2013

Who are Career Academies UK? Career Academies UK are a charity that enables sustainable, partnerships that help employers engage with schools to raise young people’s aspirations and life chances, bridging the gap between education and work, leading to enhanced career and employment prospects and outcomes for young people.

The Career Academy model

Mentors / Partners in Business Someone from the world of business who can act as a role model, critical friend, coach and advisor Partners in Business may have a long history of working in business, or may have fairly recently graduated from university

How does it work? Approximately ten sessions over two years Meetings at place of work preferred Roughly 60 to 90 minute meetings Opportunity to extend workplace insights and network Complete a Student logbook

The Career Academy internship Pivotal part of the Career Academy experience and journey Five weeks paid internship Will commence June 2016 (last week of term) Experience of the world of work Real life work/project Learning experience for student and employer NOT work experience/shadowing

Guru Lectures and Completion Guru lectures with high profile business people – approximately 8 over two years Events and visits to workplaces Graduation ceremony in April of S6

Who is the programme for? Pupils taking between 1 and 3 subjects at Higher level. Pupils who have no definite plans for destination beyond school

Application Process and Timeline Visit page on Mackie Website for further information and application forms. By end 3.15pm on Tuesday 16 th June 2015: submit your application, completed electronically Candidates will be chosen from application forms to attend interview. These will take place during the following week, i.e from 22 nd June. Successful candidates advised and initial event to introduce mentors to student and parents by end of September. Full programme of events commences immediately after October holiday
