Taking Notes Preparing for Your Presentation

What Am I Looking For? Questions About Your Topic Findings/Answers Your Opinions and Feelings Citing Your Sources (APA Style) When you start your research how do you do it and what information do you gather? We will find out about each of the points below.

Questions About Your Topic What Is It About? Can I Define It? What Are The Main Points? What Quote Or Quotes Could I Use? How Could I Summarize It? As you do your research ask the following questions as you read articles on the Internet. The answers to these questions will provide the information you need for your presentation or paper.

Findings/Answers Word Processor Outline Form Table Form Open your word processor and type your sources and notes. Use either an outline form or a table form. Whichever you like the best!

Outline Form Source 1. Main Point Detail 2. Next Main Point Detail Main Point 1 Detail

Table Form Source: Main Ideas And Details Your comments and how you can use this information

Your Opinions and Feelings How Can I Use the Information? How Do I Feel About the Answers I Have Found? In your notes for your presentation you need to include the following points

Citing sources is extremely important. Each source needs the information at the left. Citing Your Sources (APA Style) Author Date Title Retrieved Date Electronic Address (URL) The example uses a hanging indent Click Paragraph Dialog box > Indent > Special: > hanging

In Text Citations Quote Paraphrase As Reference It’s ok to use information from the Internet (Copy and Paste) as long as it is less than 20 percent of your work and you cite your source. When you copy and paste or paraphrase, you need to show where you got the information!

In Text Citations Continued… Here are instructions from UW-Madison Writing center (2004)

Examples of Citing in Your Text Here is some examples from OWL At Purdue University by David Neyhart and Erin Karper (updated September 2002)

Resources Your Resources Should Be Listed At The End Of Your Presentation Or Paper As In The Example. Resources The Writing Center, (2004), Create APA Parenthetical Citations, retrieved May, 9, 2004, David Neyhart and Erin Karper, (2002), Using American Psychological Association (APA) Format (Updated to 5th Edition), Retrieved May, 9, 2004,

Conclusion Using these steps you will have enough information to build your presentation and teach other students about your subject. Work Smart!
