5 When to Document Information
“Cite a source for all facts and evidence in your essays that you did not know before you started” (Spatt 431). Documentation acknowledges where you got the information from and gives that person credit.

6 Stealing Ideas Presenting someone else’ ideas in your own words is plagiarism. Mixing your words with the authors words or changing the meaning of the author’s original text is plagiarism.

7 Avoiding Plagiarism Acknowledge all sources using appropriate documentation. This means when you use direct quotes, summarization, or paraphrasing. Using both a works cited page and in-text citations to provide information to the reader.

8 Using Documentation There are two main citation styles MLA and APA
There are other types but these are the main two you will encounter. MLA-Modern Language Association APA- American Psychological Association

9 MLA This is the style we will be using for papers in this class.
MLA citation includes a Works Cited page that list all source used in your paper in alphabetical order. You also make use of parenthetical citations to document sources throughout your paper. There is a way to cite almost any source you come across so your textbook and writing guide will be vital.

The works cited page is a separate page at the end of your paper that lists are the sources you used in your essay in alphabetical order by author’s last name.
