What is Stop Motion Animation? »As defined on Wikipedia, “Stop motion (or frame-by- frame) animation is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved by small amounts between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames are played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion animations, known as claymation, for their ease of repositioning.”

Famous Stop Motion Examples Stop Motion has been used in famous movies like “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace and Grommit”.

Getting Started …So you might be wondering… “How do I get started?” …So you might be wondering… “How do I get started?” You should work in an organized and step-by-step manner.

Step 1: Storyboarding You will need to create a storyboard that gives a summary of what will happen in your stop motion movie. Your storyboard can be simple sketches with short explanations. Find out More About Storyboarding This is an old storyboard from “The Yogi Bear Show” found at A Blank Storyboard

Step 2: Creating Before you get started taking digital pictures you will need to create a background scenery. You can use construction paper, cardboard, paint, etc. You will also need to create your characters and props using clay or Legos. You can also use small toys or other objects.

Step 3: Digital Pictures Start shooting pictures for your movie. You should use a tripod for stable shots. A light should be used to ensure good lighting in your images. Also, it might be a good idea to ask a friend to help you move your characters and or objects in small increments. Take a picture, make small adjustments, take another picture, and continue in this manner. The more pictures you take with small changes in position, the more realistic your movie will be. Import your pictures into iPhoto. Be sure to create an album to keep your digital images organized.

Step 4: Creating Your Movie Import your pictures into iMovie. Place the images in the timeline of the movie in the correct order. Set your timing for each picture. You will need to experiment until you are satisfied with the movement timing. The more frames per second the smoother the animation will appear. Professional animators use 1 frame per movement with 24 frames per second. Add sounds. Export your file as a full quality QuickTime movie file. Import your pictures into iMovie.
