Human Body Changes Towards An Adult Body Puberty Human Body Changes Towards An Adult Body

What is Puberty? It’s a creasy time Human bodies become changing towards an adult body Hormones that were hibernating suddenly awaken and signal your body to change The changes are not only physical but also mental You grow Taller, Stronger, Heavier, Hairier, Smellier, Moodier

When do changes happen? Anywhere between 8 and 17 Most people begin between the ages of 10 and 14 For Boys: It can start as early as 9 years of age to as late as 13.5 years of age For girls: It can start as early as 7 years of age to as late as 13 years of age usually ranges from 2 to 5 years for Boys may take a year and a half or last as long as 6 years for Girls For some, most of the changes happen in a few years For some, changes happen slowly over lots of years This is normal.

Changes for Boys Body Growth Growth of penis Change in voice Facial and Underarm Hair Body Hair Growth of testicles and scrotal sac Growth of pubic hair Acne Possible Breast Development

Changes for Girls Growth of breasts Growth of pubic hair Body growth Menstruation starts Face changes shape Bodies become curvier Weight gain, particularly on the hips Underarm Hair Acne

Age At Which It Happens Puberty Event For Boys For Girls Timing of Puberty 9 - 13½ 7 - 13 Body Growth 10 ½ -16 ½ 9 ½ - 14 ½ Growth of pubic hair 10 - 15 7 - 14 Facial and Underarm Hair About 2 years after pubic hair appears 2 years after pubic hair shows up (Generally Underarm hair) Acne About the same time as underarm hair appears Around the same time as underarm hair Growth of testicles and scrotal sac 10 - 13½ N/A Growth of penis 11 - 14 ½ Change in voice About the same time as penis growth Period Starts 10 - 16½ Growth of breasts 7-13

What causes these changes? Hormones: Chemical messengers Travel in the blood stream from the place where they are made to the place where they do their work. Different glands produce hormones Each hormone have a specific job The pituitary gland resides deep inside human brain sends out hormones to the sex organs to get them to start making sex hormones. Both boys and girls make the same sex hormones. Testosterone Estrogen Boys make lots of testosterone, not so much estrogen. Girls make lots of estrogen, not so much testosterone

Body Growth (Boys) During Puberty an average growth of a boy is about 4.1 inches a year Head, arms and legs grows up Torso and shoulders catch up with the rest of the body The scrotum grows larger in the early stage The penis becomes longer and wider The head of the penis develops Sweat and oil producing glands start developing

Body Growth (Girls) During Puberty an average growth of a girl is about 3.5 inches a year Bodies become curvier Hip bones become widen and hips gain weight Head, arms, and legs start to grow Breasts start to develop Torso and shoulders catch up with the rest of the body Body gains weight Sweat and oil producing glands start developing

Other Changes (Boys) Gradually voice deepens Facial hair first appears at the corners of the upper lip Hair spread of the face and chin Underarm hair is also growing Pubic hair start appearing Sweat and oil producing glands start developing Closed glands result to Acne May be slight breast growth (temporary), will disappear in a short time

Other Changes (Girls) Period starts Pubic hair starts along the vaginal lips and spread Underarm hair begins to grow Sweat and oil producing glands also start developing Closed glands result to Acne Voice gets a little deeper Internal and external sex organs grow

The Influence of Puberty on Male Behavior Masturbation (sometimes a lot) Bumping into things Feeling moody and more aggressive Sleeping a lot Thinking about and fantasizing about sex Wet dreams

The Influence of Puberty on Female Behavior Tension Sleeping a lot Feeling moody Masturbation Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) PMS can include headaches, back pain, irritability or moodiness, feeling sad or emotional, bloating, and breast tenderness

How Male and Female Feels During Puberty Both have to deal with several changes in the body and with mixed up feelings and mood changes, But still Most of the boys easily accept the change during puberty Most of the girls have to suffer a lot to go with the changes of puberty As the girls have to Face premenstrual syndrome Worry about the size of the breasts Deal with first menstruation Wait for the time of periods Take care of the acne Someone have to wait a lot for the starts of puberty Tensed with the bra size Tensed about the fatness Brooks-Gunn and Petersen (1983) found that while boys’ body image remains basically positive as they go through puberty, girls’ self-image declines precipitously.

Problems Faced By A Girl Breast and Body Shape Will they be too big or too small?, YES - finally they are growing! When will I become a supermodel? Will they be the right shape? What will be the bra size?

Tips Your genes determine the size and shape of breasts. The size does not affect how much milk a mother can make to feed a baby. Breasts grow slowly and one side may be bigger for awhile. They may feel sore at times while they are developing. Some girls never wear bras. Some girls feel more comfortable wearing one. So be happy with whatever you have because there is no other way to increase/decrease the size

Problems Faced By A Girl Feelings

“Everything is NORMAL” Tips First of all think: “Everything is NORMAL” You are not alone! Everyone goes through that awkward phase Without this you cannot grow taller, develop breasts, curvy body Remember every girl is different, their puberty times and body changes are different Always be happy Consult with your seniors and also doctors if necessary

Problems Faced By A Girl Menstruation How do I understand its starting? When it will starts? Will it hurt? How long will the bleeding last? How often will I get a period? Will people know when I get my period? What do I do when I get my period?

Tips No one can tell exactly when it will start. Each female is different. It can continue from 3 – 8 days. some women may have a period every 23 days, and some every 35 days Some girls get cramps Talk with your MOM and doctors if necessary No one can know unless you tell them Sanitary pads and sticky strips you can use to take care of it This can be happen as the hormones are changing. Eat healthy food Be happy

Problems Faced By A Girl Acne

Tips Eat healthy food Sleep well Don’t change your food habit suddenly Mood changes are only temporary, and will settle down with time Washing your face more often with mild soap and warm water Wash your face thoroughly if you have been using make-up or sunscreen Share your feelings with your mom or someone you trust can help to relieve your feelings Consult with a doctor if its irritating a lot

Conclusion Dr Kim says: "Do you know the story of the ugly duckling that turned into a swan? There may be times during puberty when you feel that you have a lot in common with the duckling! Gradually though, you will turn into a swan! Well perhaps not, but you will turn into the wonderful, unique adult that is you."
