Quality Service Learning through Policy-Based Civic Actions Presenters: Presenters:Gregorio Medina Katie Moore Special Guest:CAP Special Guest:Regina Burke, CAP Teacher International Studies Learning Center

The Civic Action Project  Funded by The Annenberg Foundation  Practicum for the U.S. Government Course.  Five core lessons taught face-to-face.  Students choose a policy-related issue or problem to address and do everything they can to make an impact.  CAP web site provides additional instruction and resources to support the students.  Additional classroom lessons provide specific content and skills.

Polling Activity #1 I use service learning because:  It engages diverse learners.  It promotes practical skills development.  It is a school or district requirement.  Other? (please use chat section to explain why you use service learning)

The Civic Mission of Schools Report In 2002 the Carnegie Corporation gathered scholars, researchers, educators, civic/government leaders to discuss and examine the current state of civic education in our country. “We must prepare all of America’s young people to be competent and responsible citizens”.

Citizens who... are informed. participate. act politically. are socially responsible. What are the CMS Goals for Civic Education?

CAP Planners Thinking it Through Encourages deeper understanding of issues. Provides assessment tool to evaluate students’ critical thinking about the issue. Students report on their last civic action and propose their next civic action.
