How to conduct an on-site seat belt check. Delaware Office of Highway Safety Corporate Outreach May 2015

Delaware State Fleet Seat Belt Herman Holloway Campus, New Castle.

Does seat belt use matter? Road Safety for All Employees Should be a Key Component of an Employer’s Safety Culture. The annual economic cost of crashes is $277 billion or nearly $900 for each person living in the U.S. Nearly 2/3 of U.S. roadway fatalities impact employers directly.

Delaware Seat Belt Facts: Spring months typically have the highest number of unrestrained crashes. Males account for 59% of the people killed in these crashes. There were 89 unrestrained fatalities over the last 3 years; 64 were drivers and 25 were passengers. 32% of those unrestrained were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It’s the Law. Everyone in the vehicle, including backseat passengers and children, must wear seat belts properly. Lap and shoulder belts must be worn and shoulder belts must not be placed behind the back or under the arm. The driver will receive a $83.50 ticket for the failure of anyone in the vehicle to buckle up.

May 11-24, 2015

Who should participate? Health and Safety Managers Fleet Managers On-duty or Off-duty Safety Teams Anyone who cares about safety. Off-Duty Safety Perdue Milford.

Safety First! Mark the seat belt check area with cones. All staff must wear reflective gear.

When and Where? Pick a location nearest the employee parking area, where cars can be stopped and not hold up traffic on the street. Choose a time when the most employees are entering the facility. Usually, 1 hour before the start of the shift. No more than 1 hour in duration. Each encounter should only take a few seconds.

What’s the process? Teams of two people: one will mark seat belt use on a clipboard while the other will communicate with the car. “We’re here today to remind you that seat belts save lives. Glad to see your buckled up today!” -or- “We’re here today to remind you that seat belts save lives. Please put on your belt and remember to buckle up every time you get in the car.” Team member will hand driver an informational flyer and incentive item as car passes through check.

Tips for a successful check. Contact OHS to schedule your seat belt check and to get informational flyers and incentive items. Plan a day/ time when the most people are entering your facility. The duration should be no more than 1 hour in length. If cars begin to back up, you may wave them through and pick up when there are fewer vehicles. Remember to Be Seen. Safety is a top priority!
