8 Keep you from sliding on the seat during sudden stops or turns.
Keep driver from sliding and losing control of the car. PSA- Unbelted Passenger 2zYY

9 Tips for Using Seat Belts
Use both lap and shoulder belts Lap belt – under abdomen and low across hips Shoulder belt – over the collar bone, away from the neck, across the breast bone Never put more than one person in a belt!

10 CAR SEATS The “original” car seats!

11

12 CAR SEATS (P39) Traffic accidents are the leading killer of children!
Child passenger safety law: Children under 8 + less than 57” (4’9”)  forward facing, a rear seat Once they outgrow the top height or weight booster seat .

13 Children under 4 + less than 40 pounds  rear facing, in a rear seat Once they outgrown the top height or weight  forward facing

14 Children under 2 + less than 30 pounds
rear facing, in a rear seat

15 NEVER use a rear facing infant seat in the front if there is an airbag
All children under age 8 must be seated in a rear seat! If there are no rear seats  child restraint system or booster seat in front seat NEVER use a rear facing infant seat in the front if there is an airbag effect-today/960660/

16 AIR BAGS (P41) Air bags inflate at speeds up to 200 mph.
In 1995, cars with no backseat were allowed cutoff switches for the air bag Children 12 and under should be in a rear seat

17 AIR BAGS (P42) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSz6y-W-R_A
Identified on steering wheel or dashboard Indicated by SRS or SIR (SRS) Supplemental Restraint System (SIR) Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Why are they considered “supplemental”?

18 STARTING A PARKED CAR (P45)
Make sure you can see out the windows county/ Adjust seat to your height so you can reach the pedals and controls Adjust inside and outside mirrors Adjust the outside mirror so that the tip of the front door handle is in view in the lower right of the mirror Adjust and fasten seat belts Make sure car is in park (automatic) or neutral (manual)

19 STEERING (P47-48) Keep hands at 9 and 3 o’clock.
When gripping the steering wheel, keep thumbs on the face of the wheel. This will reduce the likelihood of injury if the airbag deploys. Always slow down when entering a curve. When driving around a curve your car will want to go straight so you need to guide it in the right direction. Keep car in the center of the lane. Keep to the right on a road with oncoming traffic. (2 lane road) .

20 STOPPING DISTANCES (P48)
Stopping Distances depend on: Reaction time Weather Vehicle Weight Brake Condition Tire Condition Road Conditions Speed The faster you are going the longer it will take you to stop!

21 PROPER BRAKING (P49) Most common mistake of new drivers is pressing the brake too hard. (ABS) ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM Apply steady pressure, brakes do the work! Do not have to pump the brakes. Use the RIGHT foot for gas and braking.

22 DRIVER SIGNALS (P50) Always give a signal when changing directions or lanes and when stopping or slowing. Signal 100 ft in advance. HAND SIGNALS LEFT TURN- LEFT HAND STRAIGHT OUT RIGHT TURN- LEFT HAND OUT AND BENT UP AT THE ELBOW SLOW OR STOP- LEFT HAND OUT AND BENT DOWN AT THE ELBOW

23 Hand Signals (P50)

24 DRIVING IN REVERSE (P50) Steering right = back of car goes right
Steering left = back of car goes left When driving in reverse, the driver should be looking out the back window. They are turned back to the right by placing the right hand and arm on the back of the passenger seat. Your left hand is on the top of the steering wheel

25 Turning (P51) Always signal 100ft in advance.
If a turn is missed, never back up!!! Always check mirrors, use signals, follow signs and road marking before turning. K turn or 3 point turn:

26 PARKING (P52) Curb will be on the passenger side of the car.
On a decline - wheels toward the curb. On an incline - wheels away from the curb. (Up, Up and Away!) Curb will be on the passenger side of the car.

27 ANGLE PARKING (P53) Used in shopping centers and parking lots.
Signal your turn into the space. Steer sharply into the space. Straighten out wheels once in the spot. When backing out, stay straight until your front wheels have passed the rear bumper of the car next to you.

28 Please, don’t do this…..

29 Parallel Parking Diagram

30 PARALLEL PARKING (P53) Ross' New Porsche
Pull up next to the car in front of the spot where you are going to park. Turn your wheel all the way right and begin to back into the space. When your front bumper is even with the bumper of the car in front of you, stop and turn the wheel left. Back the car the rest of the way into the space, without hitting the curb. Pull forward and center yourself in the space. NEVER park more than 6 inches from the curb!! Ross' New Porsche
