Mrs. DeJaynes’s Class! March 2015 What we’re learning... Reading Phonics - Ending S blends as in past, nest and ask Ending L blends as in milk, old, and belt Strategies: Review Language: Context clues, affixes, and root words Skills: Most of the month of March we'll be focusing on Comparing and Contrasting within a story. We'll be comparing characters and the adventures and experiences they have within the story. Compare means alike, Contrast means what is different. Math 2 Digit Addition and Subtraction Place Value Fact Family/ Commutative Property Writing We are going to begin Expository Writing. The students will be taught POW+TIDE which will be a tool to remind them of all of the components in an expository writing. POW stands for Pick my idea, Organize my notes, Write and say more. TIDE stands for T (Topic), ID (Important Details), E (Ending) Science/Social Studies Tennessee history – major people and events Compare and Contrast Night/Day, and Push/Pull Calendar Count Down Fri. Mar. 6 – Dr. Seuss celebration!! We will enjoy green eggs and ham and lots of reading! Bring a special blanket or towel to read on! Dress your WACKIEST in honor of Dr. Seuss! Mismatched clothes, shoes, socks, or crazy hair! (No make-up or costumes and clothing must be school appropriate.) Fri. Mar. 6– End of 3rd Nine Weeks Mon. Mar. 9– NO SCHOOL for students. In-service for teachers. Fri. Mar.13 – Report cards go home Mon. Mar. 16 – Parent/Teacher Conferences 3-6pm Thur. Mar. 19– Early Dismissal at 10:45. Fri. Mar LAST day to turn in March Book It forms for your free pizza. This is the LAST month we will do this!! Mon. Mar. 30 – Fri. April 3 – SPRING BREAK!!!! Mon. April 6 – Return from spring break! Bring along a book or magazine any time your child has to wait, such as at a doctor's office. Always try to fit in reading! Encourage your child to re-read favorite books and poems. Re-reading helps kids read more quickly and accurately. Ask your child questions about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why do you think Clifford did that?“ Take control of the television-It's difficult for reading to compete with TV and video games. Encourage reading as a free- time activity. Be patient-When your child is trying to sound out an unfamiliar word, give him or her time to do so. Remind to child to look closely at the first letter or letters of the word. Pick books that are at the right level-Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences. I read to you, you read to me-Take turns reading aloud at bedtime. Kids enjoy this special time with their parents. Gently correct your young reader-When your child makes a mistake, gently point out the letters he or she overlooked or read incorrectly. Many beginning readers will guess wildly at a word based on its first letter. Talk, talk, talk!-Talk with your child every day about school and things going on around the house. Sprinkle some interesting words into the conversation, and build on words you've talked about in the past.
