5 Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, there are rules that we follow. Our rules are posted. We have incentives and consequences for behavior choices. They are posted as well. THE BOOK

6 Homework Folder We believe that homework should be meaningful and reinforce mastery of objectives we are studying at school. Homework packets may have: Math & Reading Practice Test Stemscopes activities Homework Packet sent home each Friday due next Friday

7 Tuesday Folder Sent home weekly with work and information Praise work. Ask questions. Reinforce learning by correcting mistakes together. Academic concerns/ Behavior grades Please sign and return Information from Mueller and Klein

9 Academic Expectations Read nightly to build fluency. Always do your best! Writing – Complete sentences with a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end Sentences with greater depth and more details Fluent on addition and subtraction facts through 10+10 in order to apply this successfully to computation with larger numbers

10 Reading – Guided reading groups will be ongoing 1 st nine weeks – level M-N 2 nd nine weeks – level N-O 3 rd nine weeks – level O-P 4 th nine weeks – level P-Q 4 components: Comprehension Accuracy Fluency Expanding Vocabulary

11 What is fluency? Fluency is the ability to read smoothly, easily and readily with freedom from word recognition problems. Fluency is necessary for good comprehension and enjoyable reading. (Nathan and Stanovich, 1991) Fluency Goals for 3 rd Grade BOYMOYEOY 79-10793-123114-142

14 Why is reading sooo important? Continued… Which student would you expect to read better? Which student would you expect to know more about the world around them? Which student would you expect to have the broader vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school….and in life?

16 It’s TIME for the TIMELINES…. Materials: pictures or drawings pencils, markers, crayons (your choice) creativity poster board (regular size please) glue or tape Purpose: We are exploring representing information on a timeline to show past events. We are getting to know more about one another. We are writing sentences that provide information. Instructions: Gather materials. Brainstorm 6 major events in your life. Write the dates in order on your timeline across the poster. (These can be month and year or date, month, and year.) EXAMPLE: 6-2001 or June 4, 2001. Find or draw a picture of each event and attach it to the date. Write a complete sentence about each event. EXAMPLE: I was born on May 8, 1969.

18 What is Fun Friday? On Friday each teacher as a special station in her room from 2:45-3:00: Art, Reading Technology Construction Karaoke Games Reflection Room- Students visit the Reflection Room for these reasons: Homework not turned in or incomplete Signing THE BOOK 5 times in one week Office referral during the week Good behavior choices and responsible habits are rewarded with 15 minutes of pure fun!
