Television Commercials The first television commercial in the U.S. was broadcast in The watchmaker Bulova paid $4 for a placement on New York station WNBT before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The 10-second spot displayed a picture of a clock superimposed on a map of the United States, accompanied by the voice-over "America runs on Bulova time." In 1952, Mr. Potato Head became the first toy advertised on national television.

Most ads contain catchy jingles or slogans. These are repeated often during the commercial. The sound volume is often higher on commercials than regular programming. Most are humorous. Research has shown a connection between humor and persuasion.

Commercials are directed at a “target” audience, the most desirable is the year olds. Program content is connected to advertisements. ( Sears-Extreme Make-over.) Beginning on January 2, 1971, advertisements featuring cigarettes have been banned from American TV. Advertisements for alcohol products are allowed, but the consumption of any alcohol product is not allowed in a television advertisement.

Features of Television commercials: Repetition-saying the name of the product again and again. Use a slogan and/or a catchy jingle or phrase. Have lots of visual variety-transitions, fade ins, etc. Are loud and lively. Are directed at a specific audience. Children

Your Commercial Advertise a product or service. Should be under one minute long. Have a jingle and/or music. Have LOTS of transitions. Have titles that clearly state product description and are easy to read. Use bright colors and eye-catching designs. Be “school” appropriate.
