Objectives

Clinical Infometrics  A synthesis of computer technology, information theory, and measurement sciences that allows research findings to guide decision-making in real- time. It is designed to collect patient assessment information and make immediate comparisons against population data and practice guidelines for the purpose of offering clinical guidance. It also allows for a continuous accrual of information from all patients whose care is filtered through the system so that it automatically builds the population database.

Specific Aim 1  To bring together local and selected national experts in medical informatics, clinical and nursing research, and the social sciences to discuss the issue of pain among older patients and to generate a new, integrated discipline called Clinical Infometrics, with its own unique methods.

Specific Aim 2  To design a new interdisciplinary method that will characterize how Clinical Infometrics can work. We expect this prototype to be a prototype of an integrated clinical decision support system in pain (CDSS-Pain). Through the integration of large databases, clinical guidelines, and patient profiles, the CDSS-Pain will bring research and patient management together in real-time to help overcome the existing barriers to quality pain management.

Specific Aim 3  To produce grant proposals to test and implement CDSS-Pain. Through regular communications and meetings, the network will continue to develop research ideas and identify leaders to prepare grant applications that will further develop the methodologies of the field of Clinical Infometrics.

Long-term Goals  Measurement »To develop reliable and valid measures using state-of-the-art measurement models  Statistical Modeling »To develop predictive models by using sophisticated statistical techniques on large databases  Informatics »To develop tailored approaches using medical informatics for the integration of clinical guidelines and patient-reported information to facilitate informed patient-physician decision making  Practice »To develop and refine a multidimensional aspect and clinical measurement and management of pain
