3 1) Healthcare Informatics & Related Terms Healthcare informatics is the study of how healthcare data, information, knowledge, and wisdom are collected, stored, processed, communicated, and used to support the process of healthcare delivery.

Data elements: The individual elements in a history and physical or nursing assessment are data element. Techniques that are used to process data include: 1. Classifying. 2. Sorting. 3. Organizing. 4.Summurizing. 5. Graphing. 6. Calculating.

9 Knowledge Worker Roles 1.Data gatherer: Collects clinical data. 2. Information user: Interprets clinical data and uses it to monitor patients, aids with decisions. 3. Knowledge user: Compares data to current knowledge 4. Knowledge builder: Amasses data to show patterns that can be interpreted using existing knowledge or used to create new knowledge

11 Informatics Forms There are a variety of Informatics forms differ from each field : 1. Medical informatics. 2. Nursing informatics. 3. Consumer Informatics.

12 1. Medical informatics Application of information science and technology to: acquire, process, organize, interpret, store, use, communicate medical data in all of its forms in: medical education, practice and research, patient care and health management.

13 2. Nursing informatics Integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom into nursing practice.

14 3. Consumer Informatics Branch of medical informatics that studies the use of electronic information and communication to improve medical outcomes and the health care decision- making process from the patient/consumer perspective.
