Spreading of Islam Muhammad was born in Mecca. The religion of Islam was revealed to Muhammad. Prior to Muhammad, most Arabs were polytheistic (belief in many gods).

Islam Angers the Rich Muhammad’s teachings angered the rich. He believed the rich and poor should be equal and the rich should give charity to the poor. The rich were not happy and began persecuting Muslims. Because of persecution Muhammad flees to Medina where people were eager to hear his teachings.

Islamic Teachings Muhammad taught their was only 1 God. And God required people to submit and obey him. Allah is the name of the Muslim god. Allah literally translates to “god.” They believed Abraham, Moses, & Jesus were earlier prophets.

Islamic Teachings All Muslims acknowledge the 5 basic duties known as the “Pillars of Islam” After Muhammad’s death, caliphs or successors carried on his mission. They became the highest leaders in Islam.

The Islamic World

Islamic World Islam spread through caravan, war,& trade. Islam spread outside the Arabian Peninsula during 600-900 A.D. due to Muslim conquests.

Ottoman Turks In 1453 the Turks (Muslims) conquered Constantinople, which became the capital of their empire, The Ottoman Empire. They changed Hagia Sophia into a mosque. The Ottoman Empire included much of the Byzantine Empire.

Muslim and non-Muslims Wherever Muslims ruled there was always a way to distinguish a Muslim from a non-Muslim Could not inter marry Had to pay a special tax Could not hold power Religious temples could not be in the open.

Islamic Culture Islam brought with it a system of law, government, and society. Including great advancements in mathematics, medicine, and science.
