CIVIL WAR BATTLES

1 st Battle of Bull Run First major battle of the war Took place in Virginia near Washington DC in a town called Manassas In order for the Union to capture Richmond, they would need to defeat the Confederate troops in their way

1 st Battle of Bull Run Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson got his nickname during this battle. WHY? Confederate troops countercharged and let out the “REBEL YELL” Confederate victory – Many in the South thought the war was over – It shocked the North Lincoln got rid of the militia and called for 500,000 regular army troops

Shiloh Major battle in the western theater of war Fought in southwestern Tennessee Union led by Grant Confederacy led by Johnston and Beauregard Confederacy attacked the North April 6 th and forced the Union to retreat

Shiloh During the night, Union reinforcements arrived and the Confederate army was driven away the next morning.
