2 First Battle of Bull Run
July 21, 1861 Near Manassas, Virginia. It was the first major land battle of the American Civil War.

3 The Original Plan Under pressure to end the war quickly the Union Army moves to capture Richmond, Virginia. (Capital of the Confederacy) General Irvin McDowell, leader of the Union forces, leads forces against the Confederates at a crossroads called Bull Run near the city of Manassas, Virginia.

4 Confederate Response General P.G.T. Beauregard, leader of the Confederate forces blocks the Union advance. Colonel Jackson earns the nickname “stonewall” for holding the line against superior forces.

9 Results First Confederate Victory giving them confidence they could win the war. Scared the Union into realizing this war would last longer than expected. Lincoln authorized the raising of 500,000 troops for the war.
