I AM A SCIENTIST! Diana Horner 1st Grade Science Lesson Plan SC Standard 1.E.4: The Student will demonstrate an understand of the properties and uses of Earth’s Natural Resources.

What Is the Scientific Method? Step 1: We ask a question. Step 2: Form a Hypothesis Step 3:Perform experiment to test the hypothesis. Step 4: Observe and write down what happens during the experiment. Step 5: Draw a conclusion.

What Types of Scientists are there? ●Hydrologists: Scientists who study water. ●Volcanologists: Scientists who study volcanoes. ●Geologists: Scientists who study rocks. ● Botanist: Scientist who studies plants. ●Astronomer: Scientist who studies stars, sun and planets.

Lets Do an Experiment!! 1st Experiment: Water Breakdown ●Question: How does Water Break Apart? ●What do you think causes water to break apart? Discuss this with the person next you!

●What We Need: square wax paper, eyedropper, cup of water, & tooth pick. ● Step 1: Take the eye dropper and drop some water drops onto the wax paper. ●Step 2: Poke the water droplets and move them around on the paper with the tooth pick. ●Step 3: Record your results in your chart and discuss what happens with your partner!

Step 4: The Teacher will give you a drop of soap; take your toothpick and dip it in the soap. Step 5: Take the toothpick and poke/move it around in your water droplets again. Step 6: Record your observations again in the box using pictures or words to describe what has happened now that we have added another material to the water droplets. Step 7: Discuss both parts of the experiment and come up with a conclusion that you can share with the class!
