WARM-UP Warm-Up # 1 Where should I keep my science textbook? At your home.

WARM-UP Warm-Up # 2 What is an OBSERVATION? A fact or an opinion? An observation is a fact.

WARM-UP Warm-Up # 3 What is an inference? An inference is a guess about an object or an outcome based on your observations. THIS CAN BE A SCIENTIFIC OPINION

WARM-UP Warm-Up # 4 When we write our hypothesis, what format will we use? Use If, then statements If ____ [I do this], then _____ [this will happen]

WARM-UP Warm-Up # 5 When scientist analyze data, what are they looking for? Scientists are looking for trends, patterns, and relationships.

Warm-Up # 6 Sponge Bob notices that his pal Gary is suffering from slimotosis, which occurs when the shell develops a nasty slime and gives off a horrible odor. His friend Patrick tells him that rubbing seaweed on the shell is the perfect cure, while Sandy says that drinking Dr. Kelp will be a better cure. Sponge Bob decides to test these cures by rubbing Gary with seaweed for one week and having him drink Dr. Kelp. After a week of treatment, the slime is gone and Gary’s shell smells better. What is the independent variable? The cures What is the dependent variable? slimotosis What is your conclusion? Something worked If this were an experiment, would there be any problems with it? Too many variables

Warm-Up # 7 When scientist are conducting an investigation, what is the name of the variable that they are changing? INDEPENDENT VARIABLE

Warm-Up # 8 What is the scientific method? It is a simple method scientists use to conduct an investigation. It is a way to ask & answer scientific questions by asking questions & conducting experiments.

WARM-UP # 9 Read the passage and write your answers only on your warm-up page. a)What is the independent variable (what we change)? Coconut juice b)What is the dependent variable(what we observe)? Green slime c)What is Homer’s conclusion? It did not work Homer notices that his shower is covered in strange green slime. His friend Barney tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to check this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of “treatment”, there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower.

WARM-UP # 10 What is the dependent variable? Give an example. What is measured and observed The effect caused by the independent variable. Example: When a plant is given fertilizer, the independent variable is the growth of the plant

WARM-UP # 11 What are the steps of the scientific method in order? 1 Problem or Questions 2 Hypothesis 3 Experiment 4 Data Analysis 5 Conclusion

Warm up 12 B. Meteorologist1.Weather 2.Earthquakes and seismic activity 3.Rocks & minerals 4.Fossils and ancient climates 5.Active and extinct volcanoes 6.Planets and stars 7.Water found on Earth D. Seismologist E. Geologist F. Paleontologist C. Volcanologist A. Astronomer G. Hydrogeologist

WARM-UP # 13 What Is The Property Called When Wave Bounce Off Of A Surface? REFLECTION

Warm-Up # 14 What is the difference between a refracting telescope and a reflecting telescope? A refracting telescope uses two lenses. A reflecting telescopes uses two mirrors and one lense.
