Lindsey Stephenson and Amelia Ivanov

Why we choose the grade and content? Memories from SCE 4310 2 nd Graders can follow directions and benefit from working together. How is it related to both math and science? Involves measuring and making charts Content area of science – Cohesion of Water Molecules and surface tension gradecontent?

How to complete activity:  Introduce students to lesson by reading a children’s story on water tension and displaying a picture.  Ask students: Have you ever noticed water beads on some surfaces?  Have discussion with students based on this question and water tension.

Activity Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4  Introduce the Activity  8 groups of 4-5 students  What is the activity?  Website Resource: http://serc.carleton.edu/sp/mnstep/activities/26271.html http://serc.carleton.edu/sp/mnstep/activities/26271.html

Questioning!  What do tape and glue have in common?  Have a group discussion talking about how they both are sticky and can hold things together.  Discuss with students how water can be sticky with some substances. Demonstrate how when you feel water, it does not feel sticky.

Activity Continued:  Have students in groups of 5.  Have the bowl, water, pepper, a dropper, and liquid soaps ready at each table.  Have students shake the pepper onto the surface of the water.  Have students write or draw what they see happening.  Then have students put one drop of soap into the mixture. After, they write and illustrate what they see happening.

 Start a discussion with students about what they saw. Have them share what they did and their observations with the class.  Talk to students about what a hypothesis is and have them write their own – Why did the pepper scatter away? Discussion of the Activity A HYPOTHESIS is an EDUCATED GUESS about the outcome (results) of your experiment

Today we learned about the cohesion of water molecules! Could you use this activity in your classroom?

Next week we will learn about DENSITY!
