Objectives  Conceptualize the evaluation process as an ongoing task from the agency field instructor  Prepare a written evaluation of a student’s progress using appropriate forms provided by the School of Social Work  Provide effective feedback and documentation in reviewing the student’s progress  Articulate strategies for working with challenging students 2

Evaluation of Student  Evaluation is a process involving the student, agency field instructor and task supervisor (if appropriate)  Review all evaluation forms with students, preferably at the beginning of the semester  Evaluation of both strengths and areas of improvement  Focus on documentable, specific behaviors 3

Evaluation of Student  Formal evaluation at the end of each semester  Evaluation results are tied back to the core competencies and practice behaviors  Recognizes students’ professional development over time  There should be no surprises, feedback should be given on going throughout placement Jan. 16, 20154

Evaluation Form Rating scale is designed to help agency field instructors rate and articulate how well students are developing skills under each core competency Rating Scale ranges from Intern has excelled in this area 4 - Intern is functioning above expectations for interns in this area 3 - Intern has met the expectations for interns in this area 2 - Intern has not yet met the expectations in this area; but gives indication of doing so in the near future 1 - Intern has not met the expectations in this area; and does not give indication of doing so in the near future Jan. 16, 20155

Tools for Evaluation Ways to evaluate student performance:  Observed practice  Documentation of assessments, interventions  Review of oral/written reports  Review of video/audio tapes  Submission of reflective journal entries  Case presentations to staff and or supervisor Jan. 16, 20156

Tools for Evaluation Field Documentation:  Learning Contract- Identifies goals and specific task for the student  Supervision- provide ongoing feedback  Site Visit/Liaison Communication-assessment of the placement and student progress to ensure student success.  Midterm Evaluation- assess student’s progress and identifies areas of improvement that need to be addresses  Final Semester Evaluation- assess student’s achievement of practice behaviors Jan. 16, 20157

Evaluation of Student Ongoing Feedback:  The goal of feedback in field instruction is learning  Mistakes and errors in judgment are expected  Addressing professional conduct and performance that significantly influences the effectiveness of practice  Constructive feedback = providing corrective instruction in a respectful and positive manner  Approach student progress towards competencies as developmental and dependent on adequate guidance, feedback, and individualized plans Jan. 16, 20158

Evaluation of Student Common challenges  Professionalism - attendance, timeliness of documentation, etc.  Behavior problems – challenges supervisor, inappropriate comments, inability to accept feedback Common strategies  Issues most often arise due to communication of expectations (clarify expectations at the beginning of the placement)  Contact UCF Field Liaison earlier, rather than later, if problems develop  Document 9

Evaluation of Student Improvement Plan  If informal counseling does not resolve issue, we recommend a written improvement plan: a.written plan of expectations b.actions to take place c.date of review of progress d.consequences for failing to comply  All parties sign and receive a copy  The School of Social Work is here to support the agency as well as help and guide the student for success Jan. 16,

Evaluation of Student Improvement Plan Agency may:  Discuss and meet with the UCF Field Liaison  Implement improvement plan  Change Agency Field Instructor/Task Supervisor  Terminate field placement Field Office may:  Change field placement  Discuss change of major with students  Fail the student Jan. 16,

Evaluation of Students An Ongoing Process for Agency Field Instructors Jan. 16, Panel Discussion
