Remember! Macromolecules make up our cells & help our body to carry out its functions. Cell membranes are a great example of how macromolecules make up your cells…

Cell Membrane Structure

Nucleic Acids DNA is found in the nucleus of your cells. RNA can be found in the nucleus or in the cytoplasm.

How do we get our macromolecules? We eat them! Your body can use your food to build the macromolecules it needs. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Let’s say you eat steak for dinner. What macromolecule is steak made of? PROTEIN! When you’re digesting this steak, your body breaks up the steak proteins into their individual amino acids. Your body uses those amino acids to build the proteins it needs!

Can we get ALL of our macromolecules from the food we eat? NO There is 1 macromolecule that we do not get from our food. Nucleic Acids! We are born with our nucleic acids (DNA & RNA); we inherit them from our parents.

What are “Nutrition Facts” Labels? Macromolecule s Lipids Carbohydrates Proteins

What’s in a Big Mac? The nutrition facts show you what you’re eating & how much of it you should be eating. Notice that these values are based on a 2000 calorie per day diet!

What percent of your total daily value of fat comes from 1 Big Mac? 47% Of the total fat, what percentage is saturated fat? 33% Approximately what is the maximum amount of cholesterol a person on a 2000 calorie per day diet should consume? 308 mg How many Big Macs would you have to eat to receive 100% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C? 50!

The Triple Whopper By how many grams does the amount of fat exceed the daily value for someone on a 2000 calorie/day diet? 17 grams!

Approximately what percentage of total daily calories are consumed by eating 1 triple whopper? 60%

Many doctors recommend 800µg of Folate, 400 µg of Vitamin B12, & 50 mg Vitamin B6 per day to improve cardiovascular health. Based on this information & the nutrition label, the cardiovascular health benefit of a 1 oz serving of this cereal is – A.doubtful, because it provides insufficient Folate & Vitamin B6 & lacks Vitamin B12. B.superb, because it contains only 22 g of carbohydrates & 75 mg of sodium. C.excellent, because it provides all needed vitamins & is low in fat & cholesterol. D.poor, because it raises blood cholesterol levels with its high fat & cholesterol content.
