2 Objectives What is nutrition Look at the 7 food groups
Look at the functions of the food groups Why a healthy diet is important

3 Nutrition Nutrition is the process by which we obtain energy.
Nutrition is what you eat. For growth maintenance and repair. A balanced diet will have foods from all of the seven food groups.

4 Carbohydrates

5 Proteins

6 Your body cells are mostly made of protein.
Proteins are made up of lots of amino acids. We need protein to repair and replace damaged cells or to make new cells during growth.

7 Fats

8 Fats are made from fatty acids and glycerol.
We need fats for a store of energy, which you use if your body runs out of carbohydrates. We also need fats to make cell membranes and for warmth.

9 Vitamins

10 We only need these in small amounts.
They are essential for good health. They keep many vital processes happening. Deficiency diseases are caused by a lack of vitamins

11 Minerals

12 Calcium for your teeth and bones
Sodium for your nerves Iron for your blood

13 Fibre

14 Fibre comes from plants
Fibre is not actually digested, it just keeps food moving smoothly through your system. Fibre gives your digestive system an internal work out keeping it fit, healthy and working.

15 Water

16 Water is important Our blood plasma is mainly water
Water is in sweat that cools us down Chemical reactions in our cells take place in water Waste products removed in water

17 A Balanced Diet Water Proteins Vitamins and minerals Fats Fibre
