3 Anticipated Problem How can a person read and interpret food labels correctly? Start at the top & read downward!

5 Servings Serving size is the first item listed.
It is followed by the number of servings per container. The serving size is an acceptable amount for consumption at one time.

6 Be Careful! The nutrition information that follows the serving size is based on one serving.

7 How are calories figured out? Calories per gram:
Protein 4 Fat 9 Carbohydrate 4 Yes, each gram of fat you consume provides more than twice as many calories as a gram of protein or carbohydrate!

8 Calories Calories are listed next.
Calories are fuel your body uses for energy. Remember: Gasoline for a car : Calories for a human.

9 Let’s Practice… Protein= 2g Carbs= 18g Fat= 4.5g Math:
(2x4)+(18x4)+(4.5x9)= = 120.5 calories

10 Daily Values The “% Daily Value” is based on the Daily Value recommendations for essential nutrients and on a 2,000-calorie diet. Made by dietitians who work for the government Each nutrient is listed based on 100 percent of the daily requirements.
