Parts of a Map Key – explains the symbols used on a map Boundary Lines – highlights the borders between countries or other regions Compass rose – a marker that indicates the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) Cities – represented by a dot Capitals – national capitals are represented (usually) by a star with a circle Scale bar – shows the scale distance used on a map
