1.DESCRIBE a historical issue that is important to the social work profession 2.ANALYZE this issue in terms of enduring tensions in the profession 3. DRAW IMPLICATIONS from your analysis for contemporary social work practice BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! “IN THIS ASSIGNMENT WE ARE ASKING YOU TO DO 3 THINGS…”

What is your topic? How/Why is it relevant to social work practice? Give me a map of your paper – thesis statement Will there be limitations to your paper? Tell me! Summarize your topic in ½ to 1 page INTRODUCTION

Tell a story of your issue Would someone unfamiliar with your topic be able to understand the entirety of this paper with the description you provided? Being able to clearly describe the history will set you up for the analysis section This is the largest section of your paper! DESCRIBE – THE HISTORY SECTION

ANALYSIS – THE TENSIONS/INTERSECTIONS This is where the tensions/intersections should be discussed What is a “tension”? “Intersection” You will need your critical thinking cap on to critically analyze your topic with the tension/intersection that you choose Building off of previous sections Examples - Topics from audience

IMPLICATIONS Build off of previous section! What does social justice look like in relation to this topic? What does this mean for current social work practice? What laws or actions have taken place since? What does this say about social work as a profession? How will this history impact your social work practice?
