Dog Training Unlimited (Virtual) Open House This presentation is to give you all the information about our guarantee, our training methods and our programs. You’re still welcome to come to an Open House when it’s convenient for you, which is the best way to get to know us! In the meantime, please enjoy.

About Me Your local “dog whisperer” and people teacher! So just to introduce myself since, if you’re watching this, we probably haven’t met in person. And just in case we also haven’t yet talked on the phone either! I’m Molly, I’m the owner of Dog Training Unlimited. My husband Jason and I train dogs full time, together, and have been for 10 years now. We have an Australian Shepherd of our own, and two beautiful young children. I’m a real person who happens to be a dog behavior expert and loves helping people. But enough about me personally! On to talking about you and your dog again. I know you’re watching this because you want to enjoy your dog more and you might be struggling with some behaviors or getting your dog to listen to you more reliably. If you’re like a lot of families, you contacted us because you want some help that is sure to work. So first I’ll tell you about our guarantee.

Our Guarantee “Where Every Dog Can Be Trained… Guaranteed.” Dog training guarantees are extremely unusual for dog training programs, mostly because most training methods don’t work for every situation. The most common training method out there is training with treats. Almost every family who visits us has already tried training their dog, and most often it was a training with treats. This method is great for teaching commands, but does very little for getting reliability around everyday life distractions, or when you don’t have a treat, or when your dog would prefer to do something else. Like when there is a deer in the yard or when there’s a guest at your front door. Treats also do very little, if anything, for resolving behaviors like pulling on the leash, barking, jumping, digging, play biting, not coming and other behaviors like these. The reason is that dogs know the commands are optional – if they want the treat badly enough – and it’s hard to get their attention around distractions without overriding whatever else may be on their minds.

Our Guarantee “Where Every Dog Can Be Trained… Guaranteed.” The other really common training method out there is using an on leash correction-based method, like a choke chain or a prong collar, that you would snap or yank when your dog doesn’t obey or does something ‘wrong’. This training method is often used with service dogs and police dogs. The biggest problem with this method is that for FAMILY dogs it is very impractical. If your dog is off-leash, your dog knows you can’t correct him, so everything goes back to being optional. A trainer who uses this method would tell you to leave your dog on a leash all the time, even around the house, so you can physically correct them if they don’t listen or do something wrong. An ideal training method would have the benefits of these training methods – being fun, gentle, easy to use… But cover the limitations of these methods. -Reliability off leash (which would include around the house indoors!) -Reliability around distractions -Resolving unwanted behaviors

Our Guarantee Our Training Methods The way our training methods work is we use a type of remote controlled collar. This is NOT the same thing as a shock collar. Shock collars are completely different. A shock collar is punitive, and your dog is trained to avoid it. It’s a high level, uncomfortable correction, similar to the on-leash corrections we just talked about. Also similar to the invisible fences. Invisible fences usually work fine for keeping your dog in the yard, but for obedience training, shock collars are more harsh than need be. Plus shock collars (like other correction-based methods) don’t work for every dog because some dogs are a bit too stubborn for them and will fight right through them, and some dogs are too timid for them. The way this training method works is totally different: You have a remote control, when you push the button on the remote control and it sends the signal to the collar, it’s very very mild. It’s not uncomfortable at all. In fact I use the word “tap” to describe it, like you’re tapping them on the shoulder and saying “Hey, I’m talking to you.” And instead of meaning “no” or “wrong” like a shock collar would, it means “pay attention at this moment” or “pay attention to this word”. It’s like you’re tapping your dog on the shoulder and saying “I’m talking to you right now, this is a word for you.” So it’s not a correction or punishment, and your dog views it as a good thing: how they know you’re talking to them, NOT how they know they’re in ‘trouble’.

Our Guarantee Our Training Methods This training method accomplishes a few things. First, any commands your dog doesn’t already know, they will learn really quickly because they will know, out of all the words they hear going on all the time, which ones are relevant to them because they’ll feel the little tap on their neck at the same time they hear the word. Second, you’ll be able to get their attention around distractions. I compare it to when you’re reading a book. When someone taps you on the shoulder, you can’t really concentrate on the book anymore, even if you’d rather ignore the person and continue reading. It broke your train of thought. Even though the tapping on your shoulder didn’t hurt you at all. In the same way, your dog’s train of thought will be broken and you can get your dog’s attention on your command instead of everything else going on. This is really important, because dogs can only pay attention to one thing at a time. Whatever is the most relevant thing is the only thing they see and hear. That’s why it seems like your dog has selective hearing! Third, we can get your dog to listen reliably off-leash really quickly because you can enforce the commands without having to use the leash. (I will teach you how to enforce commands in the beginning so your dog makes this association – that even without the leash that the commands aren’t optional.)

Our Guarantee Our Training Methods Some great things about this are: -Your dog’s personality won’t change negatively. They won’t get that kind of robotic working dog look about them. -They will be happier because the training is so much more clear, so much more black and white. Dogs actually enjoy training MORE when they don’t have as many choices when a command is given (i.e. “do I HAVE to come or can I run away instead?”). -It has all the benefits of the other training methods, like treats, being gentle and easy to use, while covering all the limitations: reliability off leash, reliability around distractions, and resolving unwanted behaviors really quickly. -It work for every dog, without fail. This is the main reason we are able to guarantee our programs. It works along with how dogs actually make associations, so it always works.

Our Guarantee Our Training Methods A couple more things about the collar itself: -It’s rechargeable so you won’t buy batteries for it. -Most electronic remote controlled collars won’t work for this method because they’re not mild enough. The collars we use have levels that adjust on the remote control from Most people feel it on their hands around 30. Dogs are usually higher because they’re usually not as sensitive to the touch as people. But there’s still that range under 30 just in case we have a sensitive dog. There will be a level enough to get their attention and not enough to be uncomfortable at all. These collars are also made for small dogs, but they work just as well on big dogs so we use the same small collar for all of them. -It’s waterproof and works about ¼ mile away from the remote control.

Commands We Teach And Stopping Unwanted Behaviors! We’ll be teaching your dog some commands that you’ll use to get your dog to do anything you need them to do, and STOP doing anything you need them to stop doing. You won’t have to say “no”, “EHH EHH!” or yell at your dog anymore. The commands are set up so that no matter what you need your dog to do or stop doing, there’s a command that works. If they’re running away, you say “Come.” If they’re jumping (or might be thinking about it!), you’d say “Off.” If they’re barking, you say “Quiet.” This works great because your dog will know what to DO instead of just being told “no”. Then we’ll be making sure your dog learns how to do these commands quickly around heavy distractions and without help from the leash so your dog is reliable around the house with no leash on, if they get out of the door unexpectedly, or even if you want to be able to do more with your dog outside.

Commands We Teach And Stopping Unwanted Behaviors! Depending on the program you choose, here are some of the commands we might be teaching your dog.
