Presentation transcript:

1. Types of Awards 2. Identify Funding Opportunities 3. How to find grant opportunities from resources available to Cooperative Extension, UW-Extension, Universities, and on the Web.

Federal, State, & Private Awards  Federal Awards: A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient.  Carry out a broader public purpose or economic stimulation.  Guided by political agenda.  Has strict, formal guidelines and procedures for applying for and administering grants.  Applications are peer reviewed for merit and technical aspects. You will receive their comments.  Budgets can change when federal priorities change.

 Federal Awards  Categorical grants may be spent only for narrowly defined purposes, and recipients often must match a portion of the federal funds from their own funds.  Project grants are grants given by the government to fund research or outreach projects. An individual must have certain qualifications before applying for such a grant and the normal duration for project grants is three years.  Formula grants provide funds as dictated by a law.  Block grants are large grants provided from the federal government to state or local governments for use in a general purpose.  Earmark grants are explicitly specified in appropriations of the U.S. Congress. They are not competitively awarded.

 Federal Awards  There are over 900 grant programs offered by the 26 federal grant-making agencies. These programs are the more common ones that Coop sees:  Agriculture  Community Development  Education  Environmental Quality  Food and Nutrition  Family and Youth  Health  Justice  Natural Resources  Science

 How do they keep track of Federal grant programs?  Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA)  The CFDA is a government-wide compendium of Federal programs, projects, services, and activities that provide assistance or benefits to the American public.  Now published electronically on-line at  The database is searchable and uses a ##.### numbering schema.  Programs are indexed by federal government agency.  Ex. 10.### is the US Department of Agriculture  Ex.93.### is the US Department of Health and Human Services  The CFDA is useful for when you want to find the authorization for the grant opportunity you’re applying for, and Uses and Use Restrictions.  UW-Extension is required to record the CFDA#s of their federal grants.

 State Awards A state grant is an award of financial assistance from a Wisconsin State Agency, County, Municipality, or Local Govt. Unit. The source of funding can be:  Federal; we call those “federal pass-through”.  State GPR Funds (tax dollars).  Non-Federal funds received from Wisconsin Counties in partnership with Cooperative Extension  Other than above.

There also can be Non-Federal funds from sanctioned support groups. The following organizations qualify as sanctioned support groups:  County-based support organizations (i.e. 4-H Foundations)  University of Wisconsin Foundation  Leadership Wisconsin

 Private Awards A private grant is an award of financial assistance from a private non-profit organizations such as foundations, not- for-profit corporations or charitable trusts.  Stable and long-term priorities.  Shorter proposals in page length.  Often have poorly defined guidelines and procedures for applying for and administering grants.  Awards are limited to organizations in a specific geographical area.  Proposals are often reviewed continuously or multiple times per year by a board or staff members.  Are dependent on private funds and donations.

The University of Wisconsin also offers internal grant opportunities. A call for proposals is ed to staff or posted on the web.  Program Innovation Fund - an institutional fund designed to encourage innovative projects and programs that foster greater collaboration among and between the UW-Extension divisions, the UW Colleges, and other UW institutions and/or community partners.  Grants are awarded via an internal budget transfer or inter-institutional agreement.

UW-Extension has access to three subscription-based funding opportunity databases: I.GRC – Grants Resource Center  Has 2,000 funding opportunities, mainly federal and cyclical  Has access to funded proposal abstracts  Can set up a monthly alert based on search criteria II.COS/Pivot  Contains 25,000 funding opportunities, including foundations, local/state/federal agencies, foreign governments, international organizations, and corporations  Can set up a weekly alert based on saved searches III.Foundations in Wisconsin  Contains the profiles of 1,301 private foundations in Wisconsin with $7B in assets, funding $500K in grants in 2012.
