 Substances can be classified as acid, base, or neutral based on their pH.  Acids and bases are solutions usually with water as a solvent.

 Can be identified by: ◦ Sour taste ◦ Reacts with some metals ◦ Reacts with bases to form a neutral pH solution ◦ pH is less than 7; the lower the number, the more acidic the solution

 Can be identified by: ◦ Bitter taste ◦ Slippery feel ◦ Reacts with acids to form a neutral pH solution ◦ pH is greater than 7; the higher the number, the more basic the solution.
