1 ACIDS AND BASES STANDARD 7.P2B.3
Compare the physical properties, chemical properties, and pH of solutions and classify solutions as acids and bases.

2 Note taking Fill in the notetaking guide with the information about acids and bases. Make 7 notecards for the vocabulary listed in the Powerpoint. Study your vocabulary for quiz on Thursday.

3 Make NOTECARDS for the following vocabulary words
ACID BASE NEUTRAL INDICATOR pH PHENOLPHTHALEIN LITMUS PAPER

4 Acids- compounds that can be identified by their properties:
Sour taste (lemons, grapefruit) React with metals (corrosion) React with bases to form a neutral pH

5 Uses of Acids In the blue textbook, go to page L93 (middle of the book) to EXPLORING. Record how we find acids in: Food Home Body Industry

6 Bases- compounds that can be identified by their properties:
Bitter taste (unsweetened cocoa) Slippery feel (dish detergent) React with acids to form a neutral pH (anti-acids like TUMS sooth acid in the stomach)

7 Uses of Bases In the blue textbook, go to page L94 (middle of the book) to EXPLORING. Record how we find acids in: Food Home Body (health) Industry

8 Neutral Solution Neither acid or base Pure water has a pH of 7

9 pH The pH scale is a way to measure how acidic or basic a solution is
The pH range is between 0 and 14. The pH of pure water is 7, which is neutral or neither an acid or base Acidic solutions are less than 7, and more acidic as the number gets lower Basic solutions are greater than 7, and the higher the number the more basic it is.

10 Indicators Substances that can be used to determine whether a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral. pH paper Phenolphthalein Litmus paper

11 pH paper- an indicator paper that turns a different color for each pH value.
Has a range of colors depending on the pH of the solution The color of the paper is compared to the chart on the bottle to determine pH

12 Example of pH colors

13

14 LITMUS PAPER Has special dye that changes color in the presence of acid or base Blue litmus paper turns red in acid, stays blue in base Red litmus paper stays red in acid, turns blue in base Both turn VIOLET in a solution that is neutral.

15 Blue and Red Litmus paper- both turn blue in a base

16 PHENOLPHTHALEIN Used to test for the presence of a base
Is a colorless chemical that turns MAGENTA (bright pink) in a base, and stays colorless in neutral or acidic solutions.

17 Drops into a liquid
