INDEX  Definition  Composite masonry use to two reasons  Following types (1) Stone slab facing with brick backing (2) Stone facing and brick backing (3) Brick facing and concrete backing (4) Ashlar facing and brick backing (5) Ashlar facing and rubble backing

Definition- Composite masonry is the one which is constructed out of two or more types of building units or of different types of building materials.

 The composite masonry may be adopted due to two reasons :- 1 :- improvement in the appearance of walls etc., 2 :- use of available materials,to obtain optimum economy.

Composite masonry may be of the following types : i. Stone slab facing with brick backing ii. Stone facing and brick backing iii. Brick facing and concrete backing iv. Ashlar facing and brick backing v. Ashlar facing rubble backing

 In this type of composite masonry, the stone slab are used in the face work and brick masonry is used as backing the stone used may be natural or artificial.

 The stone slab are secured to the backing either by means of metal cramps or by projecting the headers in the face work well inside the backing.  The number of joints in the backing may be more then the joints in the facing and therefore the bonding between to faces should be perfect to avoid unequal settlement of the two leaves.

 In this type of composite masonry, a wall is constructed in brick work and the stones are provided on facing, to appear as if the wall is constructed in stones.

 It is adopted to improve the appearance of the structure or wall at a lesser cost.  The stones are properly secured to brick backing by providing toothing.

 In this type of composite masonry, the bricks are used as the facing material and the concrete is used as backing.

 this type of construction is adopted to get the strength of the concrete and to so the wall face, as if constructed with bricks.  The bricks are secured to the backing by projecting alternate brick headers into the concrete.

 In this type of composite masonry the face of stones are rough tooled and the chamfered and the stones are provided in the face work only.

 the backing may be mead in brick. This type of construction reduces the cost of work considerably.  The height of the course is always more then 20 cm and the width of each stone is about 1*1/2 times its height.  For walls up to 75 cm in thickness, the bond stones should extend for full thickness of the wall.

In this type of composite masonry the faces of the stone are rough tooled and the chamfered and the stones are provided and face work only.

 The backing may be made of rubble.  This may reduce the cost of construction, as the rubble stones are available at cheap rate.  The stones are secured to the backing either by means of metal cramps or by projecting the heading in the face work well inside the backing.
